Moving from California to Oklahoma
June 15, 2021
Dubbed “The Modern Frontier” with a mix of historical attractions and today’s conveniences, Oklahoma City has established itself as a desirable location for families relocating from across the country. That is even true for neighboring states and cities that compare on a number of levels to life in OKC.
Craft Homes has helped hundreds of families make the move in recent years. Here are a few of the most common reasons that people are moving from California to Oklahoma.
Quality education
Oklahoma is also known for its high-quality schools throughout the state like Deer
Creek, Edmond, Moore, Mustang, Norman and Oklahoma City. Niche.com ranked Edmond as the state’s second best and the top choice in Oklahoma City. It includes 11 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence which is the second most in any Oklahoma district. Deer Creek and Norman also rank in the top five according to Niche.
Arts and culture
A USA Today poll from editors, advisors and readers, also recognized Oklahoma City as the best city for public art in the nation. This is the result of a 30-year investment in the MAPS initiative that placed murals and statues throughout parks and along the side of buildings. In the Plaza District, you will find the Plaza Walls which is a privately supported rotating mural gallery. It is a popular spot to stop and take photos with friends and family. For shopping and dining, the whole family will enjoy Western Avenue District and Bricktown.
History buffs will love the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum that collects, preserves and exhibits arts and artifacts that promote interest in the American West.
Affordability
According to Best Places, the overall cost of living in Oklahoma City is 14.6 percent lower than the U.S. average. Housing is a major factor, with SmartAsset finding that residents spend less than 30 percent of the median annual income on housing costs. That is nearly half of what homeowners pay in Boston, which was the most expensive of 50 cities included in the report. Oklahoma was the least expensive and Tulsa followed in third. Additionally, state and local taxes are 30 percent lower than the national average.
Oklahoma’s property taxes are a big contributor too, ranking 46th with a $291 burden per capita according to the Oklahoma Senate. The median is $682. Oklahomans also pay the 41st lowest state and local taxes and fees per capita.
